Drake Signs With Young Money

Via Mtvnews.com
Mixtapes are a movement. For some, giving away music could mean much more than trying to sell their tunes — but Drake played the game right. He started giving away his mixtape So Far Gone earlier this year, and the word of mouth spread with fans, his peers and record-company executives: a recent New York concert found [Warner Music exec] Lyor Cohen in the crowd, standing among screaming fans, along with Kanye West and Talib Kweli.
Well, the wait is over: After weeks of speculation, Drake has chosen to go with the home team and sign with Lil Wayne's Young Money Records, according to a source close to the situation. The deal breaks down as a joint venture between Young Money and Cash Money, with Universal Republic distributing. Drake's management was adamant that he should be viewed as an independent artist, although Universal will distribute the project.
"Today is a definitely a comfortable day for me, having my team now that's been in place for a couple of years. It's just a great day," Drake told MTV News recently in New York. "It's something new, but it feels familiar."
Drizzy is excited about having a corporate push to help with the momentum he's gained independently.
"Independent is a funny term," he told MTV News on the set of his video for "Best I Ever Had." "I can go independent, but you need distribution, period. You need somebody to distribute your record and you need that army that a label has to really push the record."
So Far Gone became this year's most talked-about mixtape because, in effect, Drake combines the best of both worlds by being a strong singer and rapper. His singing talent is prominent on the tracks "HoustonAtlantaVegas," "Little Bit" and "A Night Off"; his rapping on songs like "Uptown" and "Ignorant Sh--" is as sharp as a broken bottle in a barroom brawl. He rhymes are just as strong: "The game needs change and I'm the muthaf----n' cashier" (from "Successful"); "Account's in the minus, yet I'm rolling round the f---ing city like your highness" ("Say What's Real").
His popularity has gotten so strong that Drake performed — along with Weezy and the Young Money crew — in a prime slot at the BET Awards on Sunday night.
Drake's official debut LP, Thank Me Later, is currently in production and due later this year, with Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Jay-Z listed as possible collaborators. This summer, look for Drake on tour with Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy and Soulja Boy Tell'em as part of the Young Money Presents: America's Most Wanted Music

The-Raw. Com: Track Reviews
The-Raw.com is adding a new feature to the site, track reviews. In this feature, we will review some of the latest tracks that have been released and give our take on those joints. The rating system is as follows:
1.0 - Don't tell ANYONE about this.
2.0 - I Don't Get it.
3.0 - I Get It.
4.0 - Luv It Mane.
5.0 - Highlight Of The Year.
Artist: The Clipse ft. Pharrell
Track: I'm Good
Album: Til' The Casket Drops
Production: The Neptunes
Overall: 3.5 out of 5.
My favorite duo in Hip Hop currently, The Clipse, drops their first single "I'm Good". The track is produced by the Neptunes. The track features typical Neptunes production, kind of light and keyboard driven. The track is pretty much about the duo's relative good situation currently. Pharrell ad libs throughout the track and it does add a melody throughout the verse ("I'm looking good, I'm looking good, I'm looking good, I'm looking good"). Overall, I feel this is a good first single, not a hit but I like the track.

Artist: St. Lunatics
Track: Polo
Album: City Free
Production: N/A
Overall: 3.0 out of 5
Nelly & The St. Lunatics are going to drop their sophomore album City Free this summer. This is a leak off the album entitled "Polo". Of course, this is an ode' to the timeless clothing line. The track features all of the Lunatics including City Spud who has been out for a minute. The track is pretty laid back. Nelly & Murph seem the most natural on the beat. City Spud does a verse reminiscent of his bro Nelly. Overall, I feel where they coming from with this one.

Artist: Wu-Tang Clan ft. Ghostface, RZA, Havoc
Track: Evil Deeds
Album: Chamber Music
Production: N/A
Overall: 3.75 out of 5
The Wu is back with a new album which drops this Tuesday Chamber Music. This is a track off the album entitled "Chamber Music" ft. Ghostface Killah, RZA, Havoc. Ghost does his thing over a vintage Wu Tang backdrop. RZA comes through and delivers a solid verse. Havoc also goes in ("I aint with that Twitter shit niggas try to follow me/watch em get hit like the Mega Millions lottery"). Overall, a great track. I feel RZA or Ghost could've went in harder but the track is still nice regardless.
Artist: Young Buck ft. Lil Murda & Hi-C
Track: Overcharge Me
Album: N/A
Production: N/A
Overall: 2.5 out of 5.
Young Buck drops a new track featuring Lil Murda & Hi-C "Overcharge Me". The premise is a bunch of niggas out there charging high prices on weed. Buck pretty much states his frustration with this practice, joining him is his proteges. The track features nice production and I like Buck and his rant at the end I can feel. The only downsides to the track is that I'm not really feeling Hi-C and Lil Murda so it takes away from the track, but Young Buck is still out there making noise in the industry as his recently dropped mixtape is a testament to.

Artist: The Game ft. Diddy, Chris Brown, Usher, Boyz II Men, Mario Winans
Track: Better On The Other Side
Album: N/A
Production: Polow Da Don & DJ Khalil
Overall: 4.5 out of 5.
The Game drops a tribute track to the late, great Micheal Jackson. The track was recorded on the night Michael Jackson died. It features Diddy saying a few sobering words at the beginning of the track and the end. (which I think Puff is great at doing those). It also features Chris Brown, Boyz II Men, Usher, Mario Winans.
I've heard that either Polow Da Don (Usher "Love In This Club")or DJ Khalil (Clipse "Kinda Like A Big Deal")produced the track or maybe it was co-produced. Overall, this is a great track especially considering the fact that it wasnt pre-planned and done spur of the moment so you can feel the raw emotion in the track. It's definitely up there for highlight of the year if not just for the timestamp of one of the year's biggest stories.
